written by Avery Rikard
In our gathering on Sunday, we looked at how destructive idols can be and how Jesus has more life to offer us. It brought to mind a phrase I was once told:
We will always make time for that which is important to us.
How we spend our time, whether practically throughout a day with work and play or even just the thought patterns we engage in our minds, is a massive indicator of what we value. As I look at my own life and reflect on where my time goes, I see more clearly the things that are really good things that can also become idols for me.
Even in our Bible Reading Plan this morning, Hosea 8 reminded us in verse 4 that idols are for our destruction.
They make their silver and gold into idols for themselves for their own destruction.
Friends, the good news is that we serve a gracious God, that even in our thoughtlessness of him or faithlessness toward him, he loves for us to draw boldly to his throne of grace again and again and receive mercy (Hebrews 4:16). He never grows tired or weary of us returning to him. He never grows bitter towards loving us. How wonderful is our Beloved Savior!
Let us draw near today, casting aside idols that only offer us destruction, and taking Jesus at his word that he offers us abundance of life instead. God is for our good. Idols never are.
